Stories in the Spotlight Gala Celebrates the Power of Performance, Community and Generosity

Montreal’s extraordinary philanthropic community came together on June 18 to celebrate the English-language performing arts at Centaur Theatre’s 18th annual fundraising gala, “Stories in the Spotlight.” Bringing together artists, supporters, community leaders and theatre lovers, the evening raised more than $100,000 in support of Centaur’s programming, ensuring that inspiring stories can continue to take the stage for years to come.
The evening put the spotlight on the magic of live performance with a spectacular variety show hosted by beloved Montreal broadcaster Terry DiMonte, known from his legendary days at CHOM FM, who also served as Honorary Chair and led the evening’s exciting live auction.
The night’s headline performance featured legendary Montreal jazz artist Ranee Lee, “The Queen of Jazz”, who captivated guests with a six-song set specially curated around Centaur’s upcoming 58th theatre season. From Joni Mitchell’s moving “Both Sides Now,” inspired by the story of Ismene, to her soulful interpretation of “The Power of Love,” offering a glimpse into next season’s Holiday in Zürich, Lee’s performance was a beautiful celebration of the connection between music and storytelling.
The evening continued with performances highlighting the incredible talent that will grace Centaur’s stages next season. Actor and singer Étienne Thibeault, who will appear as Louis Riel in Women of the Fur Trade, performed a song by Mi’kmaq artist Willy Dunn. Actors Wood Barthelmy and Frédéric Charbonneau delighted audiences with a scene from Waiting for Godot, introduced by Artistic Director Eda Holmes and Associate Artist Rebecca Gibian, who will co-direct the production. Actor, musician and Montreal favourite Raoul Bhaneja added his distinctive musical talents — including a surprise harmonica appearance during the Godot scene — while comedian Joey Elias brought the house down with a hilarious stand-up performance.
Guests continued the celebration in Centaur’s intimate black box theatre, transformed into a mischievous “speakeasy” where cabaret duo Cabaret Cowboys provided a swinging and unforgettable late-night soundtrack.
The immersive atmosphere of the evening was created by renowned designer Roberto Menegati of Menegati Design, whose décor drew inspiration from the glamour and energy of jazz-age clubs in tribute to Ranee Lee’s legendary career. Menegati also took on the role of chef for the evening, creating a gourmet culinary experience featuring tuna tataki, antipasti, teriyaki skewers, picanha carved live at the chef’s table, creamy gorgonzola penne. Long-time Centaur supporter and donor Marisa Testa added a sweet finale with exquisite Italian desserts, while hospitality sponsor SAQ provided the evening’s beverages. Floral arrangements were beautifully designed by Terrafolia Flowers.
The live auction, led by Terry DiMonte, along with the online auction, featured an incredible selection of experiences and prizes, including a three-night stay at the NYC Hilton, a seven-day getaway at Crane Resort in Barbados, a trip to the RBC Canadian Open, theatre tickets, artwork, boutique gift certificates and much more.
The success of “Stories in the Spotlight” was made possible by the generosity of the gala committee: Board Members Patricia Baker, Susan Da Sie, Christine Maydossian, Adela Nitu and Norma Tombari, as well as designer and chef Roberto Menegati, along with the evening’s patrons Execaire Aviation, Fiera Capital, the Kent Group (RBC Wealth Management) and an anonymous patron.
The evening welcomed many special guests and members of the Centaur community, including Andreanne Moreau from the City of Montreal, CTV news anchor Peter Roberts, Gala founder Janet Black, Centaur Board members Jerome Bichut, Michael Baratta, Anthony Czaharyn and Steven Trafford Taylor; Belle Grivakis; Centaur Theatre founder Maurice Podbrey and Elsa Bolam; former Board Chair Hartland Paterson; Montreal theatre icon Ellen David; former Gala ChairsRodrigue Lussier and Lucas Pontillo; and long-time donors Hugh and Beth McAdams.
“Stories in the Spotlight” was a joyful reminder of what makes theatre so powerful: the ability to bring people together, celebrate creativity, and share stories that reflect the richness of our community.
