Three Women of Swatow

Written by Chloé Hung

Directed by Sophie Gee

With Shiong-En Chan, Qianna MacGilchrist, and Julie Tamiko Manning

Dark humour, sharp wit, and family secrets collide in Three Women of Swatow, a gripping exploration of generational legacies from acclaimed playwright Chloé Hung. When Mother accidentally kills her husband, the stage is set for a fierce and wickedly funny confrontation as three generations of Chinese-Canadian women come together to clean up the mess—literally and figuratively.

Bringing to light the complexities of family dynamics, cultural expectations, and the scars left by cycles of abuse, the play blends suspense, absurdity, and poignancy as it tells the dynamic story of these three unique women. An all-star cast featuring Shiong-En Chan, Qianna MacGilchrist, and Julie Tamiko Manning bring the characters’ pain, sorrow, and biting sense of humour to thrilling life.

With its sharp dialogue and unflinching storytelling, Three Women of Swatow is a play that confronts difficult truths with care and comedy. Whether it’s confronting the violence of the past or the inescapable ties of family, the play asks: can these women break the cycle, or are they destined to repeat it?

About the Playwright

Chloé Hung, a remarkable new voice in Canadian theatre, has quickly gained recognition for her bold storytelling and unique voice. Her fearless exploration of complex themes and her ability to blend dark humour with emotional depth have cemented her status as a rising star, not just in Canada but on the international stage.

Three Women of Swatow was commissioned and developed by Tarragon Theatre, Richard Rose Artistic Director, and first produced at Tarragon in March 2020.
