Sakura – After Chekhov

Written by Harry Standjofski

Directed by Eda Holmes

With Deena Aziz, Ravyn R. Bekh, Stefanie Buxton, Marcel Jeannin, Marc-Antoine Kelertas, Howard Rosenstein, and Paul Van Dyck

Based on Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece The Cherry Orchard, this is the story of an upper-class family who are forced to sell their estate, including a beloved orchard, to pay off debts that have accumulated from years of mismanagement and decadence. This witty comedy with a hint of nostalgia brings the richness of the Chekhovian original right into our own backyard along the Saint Lawrence River. Montreal playwright Harry Standjofski’s urgent and clever new adaptation of this timeless classic deftly captures the existential angst we all experience in the face of an uncertain future.

“Pure Montreal magic. Prepare to laugh, cry, and wonder as it’s a play that feels like home, yet carries with it the weight of all the things we leave behind.”
— Mountain Lake PBS
“Funny, lively, and full of family drama… The cast is marvelous: performing the characters’ uniqueness with excellent comic timing.”
— CurtainsUp
“A triumph in direction, design, and performance. A production that not only honors Chekhov’s legacy but transforms it into something beautifully modern and universally moving. For those looking to experience a piece of theatre that balances humor, nostalgia, and insight, this is a must-see.”
— La Métropole
“This adaptation retains the original’s combination of melancholic ennui and comic grotesquery […] Spectacular visuals and aural effects from the design team too – always loved that unexplained, possibly apocalyptic “zing” the characters hear – with music from Stars frontman Torquil Campbell.”
— Jim Burke
